Your Ultimate “How-to-Style” Hair Guide

Your Ultimate “How-to-Style” Hair Guide

Having a hard time trying to figure out your hairstyle? Don’t have a hair meltdown! Whether curly, straight, thick or fine, Plan B is here to give you the ultimate “hairstyles for dummies” hairstyling tutorial.

Curly Sue

If you have naturally curly hair you already have head start! Get yourself a good curl enhancer (like Redken Curvaceous perfecting lotion), apply to damp hair and blow dry with a diffuser. If you have poker straight hair, you might have to work a little harder and heat tools will be involved. Toss toss your head upside down and use fingers to massage hair while blow drying to help add volume. Make sure you apply a heat protector and then get to curling with either your flat iron or curling iron. A flat iron curl is a bit more natural and modern looking, whereas if your going for polish and glamour, opt for a curling iron.

Sleek & Straight

For those with thick, course or frizzy hair, frizz fighting products are key to the sleek look. Products in the “smoothing” category are your friend. We love EVO’s Easy Tiger straightening balm for styling because it provides thermal protection, moisturises, conditions and smoothes all hair types. Blow-dry your hair using a large round brush to really smooth the cuticle from root to tip. Use a flat iron to straighten one-inch sections of your hair to give it even more strength against the humidity. Set with hairspray and strut out the door.

Easy Up-dos

There are endless options for throwing your hair up in a hurry and still looking like you tried. For some simple suggestions check out our article on easy hair hacks. There’s also about a million and a half tutorials on YouTube, but we all know you don’t have time for that so here’s a few of our favourites:

Get Volume

Plan B Kelowna Hair Salon | Volumized Hairstyles

If your locks are a little limp and your looking for that va-va-voom volume, start by applying a volumizing mousse to towel dried hair. Next blow-dry using a round brush, focusing on “lifting” hair at the roots. Then use a curling iron to curl hair at the crown and top of head to set the volume. Finish with a volumizing hair spray to lock in the body. Another cool tip is to stack your hair on top of your head after you’ve curled it, coating the bottom of your hair with hairspray, then letting it down after your curls have cooled. You can also follow this link to get the steps for perfecting the salon blow out at home. Volumizing products are essential and Redken’s volumizing line has just about everything you need.

Wavy Babe

Seems like everyone wants the California girl look these days, especially in the Okanagan. The best product for creating beachy waves is a salt spay (try EVO Salty Dog or make your own salt spray). There’s a few ways to achieve this look: 1) If you have some natural wave already, spritz damp hair with salt spray and lightly scrunch your hair with your hands while you blow dry. 2) Braid your hair, then heat it up by pressing a flat iron over it to make imperfect waves. 3) Alternate the way you flat iron your hair to make it wavy – turn your wrist up and then down as you move down a section of hair, creating not-quite-curled texture.

For the Boys

Plan B Kelowna Hair Salon | Men's Hairstyles

Guys, we haven’t forgotten about you! Men’s hairstyles have come a long way, with more and more guys experimenting with new haircuts, products and styles. Very few dudes are willing to spend a significant amount of time on styling their hair, so here’s our top 3 quick & easy hairstyles for men:

You Messy Boy – for short hairtsyles, get your hands on Layrite Cement Hair Clay. Rub a small amount of Cement thoroughly between palms until product softens.  Distribute evenly through damp or dry hair and style as desired.  The drier the hair, the higher the hold, the more matte the finish.

Classic Pompadour – first off, start with the right haircut from your Barber. Partially towel dry your hair then grab a blowdryer and round brush. Use the round brush & start blow drying the sides and top of your hair straight back. Save the front of your hair for last. With the round brush, blow dry the front straight up to create elevation. Then, use the round brush to grab the front of your hair, and quarter turn the brush to fold the front back while you continue to blow dry. Finish off with a small amount of pomade — usually two fingertips worth. Comb your hair up, and pat it down until you get the desired shape.

Clean Fade – Ok this is a cheat, because this style is really all hair cut! But if you want the easiest or the easy this si the way to go. Just make sure you book in with a Plan B Barber so you get the cleanest & freshest possible fade, because a fade gone wrong can really cramp your style 😉

So there you have it! If these tips & tricks aren’t enough to perk up your style, perhaps it’s time to make a trip to the salon for a fresh cut or colour? Call Plan B Headquaters Salon & Barbershop in Kelowna to make an appointment with your stylist or barber today. (250) 717-7526
