#KnowTheMo: The True Meaning of Movember

#KnowTheMo: The True Meaning of Movember

Ahhh.. Movember! That lovely time of year when all the men of the land attempt to out do each other with displays of upper lip masculinity. But the rue spirit of “Movember”, as it has lovingly become known, is much deeper than a contest of who can grow the best ‘mo.

What is Movember?

Movember began in Australia in 2003 to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers, according to the Movember Foundation, a nonprofit that raised nearly $21 million in 2013. Over the years, the campaign has expanded to include raising awareness for men’s mental health. Since 2003 Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world.

The basic premise is this:

  1. Start clean shaven on November 1st
  2. Grow and groom your Mo throughout the month of November
  3. Start conversations, raise awareness, and collect funds to donate to the cause!

We know many of you got started on the right foot with us on November 1st for our “Shave-Off” event, where we had a ton of guys pop by the Plan B shop and Train Station Pub to get their baby face on!

Men’s Health: Get The Facts

1 IN 7 CANADIAN MEN WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE CANCER IN THEIR LIFETIME.

Across Canada, there are more than 170,000 men living with and beyond prostate cancer. Many are dealing with serious side effects from treatment.

TESTICULAR CANCER STRIKES EARLY. IT’S THE MOST COMMON CANCER IN YOUNG CANADIAN MEN.

Testicular cancer has a 95% survival rate. But that’s of no comfort to the 1 man in 20 who doesn’t make it.

GLOBALLY, ON AVERAGE, 1 MAN DIES BY SUICIDE EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY.

Around the world, the rate of male suicide is alarmingly high: 6 out of 10 suicides are men.

No ‘Mo, No Problem

Can’t grow a mustache? No problem. Not every man can, and that’s OK.

“There’s no such thing as a perfect mustache. Every mustache is perfect in its own unique way,” said Adam Paul Cousgrove, the chief executive of the American Mustache Institute, which chooses an official Mustached Man of the Year annually. “They’re the snowflakes of the face.” So basically whatever you got, flaunt it.

What about the ladies? Women can participate in the movement in many ways, from donating to raising awareness to just plain putting up with a full month of being surrounded by ‘staches. Everyone can help raise awareness and bring the focus of this annual event back to it’s main purpose: to make an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.
