Alcohol free hair products | Kelowna Hair Salon | Plan B Hair Co.

Alcohol-Based Products

While we’re all for a little nip in our cocktails, alcohol is not an ingredient you want to find in your hair products. Why? Because it dries the $h!t out of your hair! When products containing alcohol are applied to your hair, the alcohol evaporates very quickly taking some of your hair’s natural moisture with it. The end result is dry, flaky, lifeless locks. The most notorious criminals are hairsprays, spray gels and mousse.

What to look for instead: Redken has some bomb alcohol free styling aids. You can also review this list:

Cheap Shampoos

We can’t say this enough: if you put crap on your hair, you will have crappy hair. End of story. Your shampoo (and conditioner!) are the foundation of your hair care routine. Even if you skimp on spending on your other hair products, this is the place to invest. Most cheap brands that you find on supermarket or drug store shelves strip colour and remove hair’s natural oils with high quantities of sulfates and other lathering ingredients.

What to look for instead: A great shampoo has the power to transform your hair; in fact, you may find once your hair is treated right in the shower you have less need for as many styling aids! So there you go frugal betties, spend on shampoo and save on styling. Here’s a lit of some of the top rated professional shampoos on the market:

Silicon based hair products are bad | Kelowna Hair Salon | Plan B Hair Co.

Silicone-Based Products

Silicone is like rubber and/or plastic that is used as a sealant against water and even air. It is not a natural ingredient and although it gives hair the illusion of shine, it is not the shine you want! While silicon may temporarily seal your hair cuticle to give it a “healthy” look, it will actually build up over time weighing the hair down, making it limp, lifeless, and with time, very dull. Also, by sealing the hair shaft silicone prevents your hair from absorbing hydration and nutrients, which is what really gives you the natural, healthy shine you are looking for.

What to look for instead: Alternatives that do not cause build up on the hair shaft. You want a products that help improve not only the immediate look and feel of your hair, but also help improve it with time.

Too much of a good thing… can be a bad thing!

Using a major cleanser too often can start to remove too many of the natural sebum your hair and scalp need to stay healthy. Without the sebum, your hair can start to get excessively dry and cause breakage. So don’t use a clarifying shampoo more than once a week at most. After you’ve clarified your hair, you can apply a masque and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing out. You’ll notice immediately how rehydrated and soft your strands feel! Just be cautious, as using a mask more than once a week can start to leave your hair flat, weighed down, and harder to style.

What to look for instead: Everything in moderation! Just like us your hair sometimes needs a vacay from all the stresses of everyday life. If you can, try letting your hair have a day of rest and go au-naturel once in a while. Lastly, follow the advice of your stylist and for additional tips read this article:
