Feature Stylist: Meet Terri Maxwell

Plan B Kelowna Hair Salon - Stylist Terri Maxwell“How long have you been in the industry?”

I completed my training at MC College in October of last year. I really appreciated and enjoyed learning all the most up-to-date techniques for cutting and colouring; I feel pretty confident that I can achieve basically any style that a client comes up with.

“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”

I used to live up in For St. John working in oil industry. I was tired of it and wanted more stability for myself and my daughter. I’ve always liked makeup and hair so I decided to try out hair school, and it turned out that I have a natural knack for it! It is most definitely my passion, I feel like this is where I’m supposed to be and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

“What techniques do you specialize in?”

I love doing balayage colour and I really like creating sculpted cuts and short textured styles because you really need to think about the process. I love having the creative freedom to create styles, giving the client what they want and exceeding their expectations.

“Describe your personal style.”

I feel like im very versatile, sometimes I’m very punk and then other times I can be like barbie gangster you know what I mean? I’m very out there and I like to try all different looks. I’m not shy and am very expressive with my fashion choices. One day I could be in a feminine pretty dress and the next I’m in Converse shoes and a jean jacket.

“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”

One time when I was a teenager I got this terrible haircut! I had long blonde hair and the cut they gave me was uneven and short, I hated it. Since I didn’t like the cut I thought maybe changing the colour would help. So my mom and I picked up one of those at home kits that includes an all over colour with highlights and she helped me apply it. It was awful… it turned out the most horrible shade of brown (if you can even call it brown) and the highlights were orange and terrible. I wouldn’t even leave my house it was so bad. We ended up going to a salon and spending a ton of money to get a colour correction back to a more natural looking blonde.

“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”

I would want to be the female version of Rob Dyrdek! I’m just so intrigued with his life, he’s so hilarious and does all these out the box random things. His life would be so fun I would love to do that!

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”

I like a variety of genres… so it’s hard to choose. I would definitely take something like old school like Fleetwood Mac or CCR and also some Ace of Base (*laughs) and maybe some Offspring greatest hits? I think I would just take my iPod and keep it on shuffle.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”

Ok this one is easy – Dirty Dancing, Super Troopers and Dazed & Confused.

“What’s your most embarrassing moment?”

I don’t feel like I have a most embarrassing moment? I laugh at myself a lot and don’t take myself too seriously so nothing really stands out as super embarrassing for me.

“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”

I’m a Capricorn. I’m not big on astrology but anytime there’s an article describing Capricorn traits I do relate with it. I like to have a good time but I can be sensitive and am very strong willed with a leader mentality.

“Do you have any nicknames?”

People from home call me by my last name: Maxwell. In school when I had red hair a lot of people called me Cherry… sometimes I get called Momma T.  But as far as a straight out nickname that sticks there’s nothing really consistent.

“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”

I absolutely love the End Doctor split end sealant from Evo. It’s a heat protector and helps to repair any crazy damage. It makes your hair silky smooth and transforms any frizz. It just works amazingly.
