Feature Stylist: Meet Cara Chapman

Feature Stylist: Meet Cara Chapman

Plan B Kelowna Hair Salon - Stylist Cara Chapman“How long have you been in the industry?”

I was born & raised in Kelowna and been in industry for about 2 1/2 years now. I graduated from MC College and jumped right into working as a stylist at a few different salons in town before finally landing at Plan B, which is the best decision I’ve ever made, I love it here.

“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”

Hair has always been one of my passions. When I was younger I would do updo’s and colours for my friends and my sister, I was even cutting my own hair! So becoming a stylist was just a natural thing. I’m super creative and artsy so it’s a good fit for me.

“What techniques do you specialize in?”

I love doing balayage colour and extensions. I prefer tape in extensions because they are less damaging to the hair and they look more natural. Also they’re re-useable, so they’re more cost effective. Those are my favourite services to provide but I do everything, I would consider my skill set to be well rounded over all. I really like barbering and men’s cuts too. Currently I’m really loving the fall colours that clients are requesting right now, the warmer tones are absolutely beautiful.

“Describe your personal style.”

I would describe my style as natural, classy and low maintenance. I prefer to dress classy and put together but always comfortable and down to earth. I guess you could say my style is pretty reflective of my personality, I’m just me!

“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”

I’d have to say, a long time ago when I was trying out new colours (I was about 12 or 13 years old) and I used a box colour on my hair. It went completely orange and I had to go to a salon for colour correction. It was a pretty terrible experience.

“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”

I’m not a huge movie person, nor do I know the names of many actors but I’d want to be someone funny for sure. I’m an outdoorsy person, so I guess anyone who embodies that would be like me. I really spend a lot more time being outside and active than I do paying attention to Hollywood or pop culture.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”

I wouldn’t take albums honestly, I would probably take something more practical like a flint or a fishing rod! But if I have to choose, it would probably be a random playlist of all my favourites: old school 90’s rock as well as country music.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”

Can we just skip this one? *laughs* I don’t even know, like I said I’m not a movie person! But I guess some of my favourites are Shawshank Redemption & The Godfather, I do like the classics.

“What’s your most embarrassing moment?”

There’s one incident that immediately comes to mind. It was a long time ago but I still remember it. It was in the 5th grade, I wasn’t paying attention at all and the teacher asked me “How many legs does a bird have?”. Because I wasn’t paying attention I didn’t hear the question so I just yelled out “16!”. Everyone laughed at me and I felt so embarrassed!

“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”

I’m an Aries, and I fully believe I am an Aries. The description of the personality traits is always so bang on.

“Do you have any nicknames?”

My friends will call me CareBear sometimes, they always have since I was a kid. Everyone on my soccer team called me Chappy, because my last name is Chapman. Honestly though none have really stick, so I don’t really feel like I have a solid nickname.

“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”

EVO Icon Welder hot tool shaper, it’s a leave in conditioner and a heat protectant. It smells amazing and I just love it both for myself and my clients. I also love the Layrite Cement Clay for men because the matte finish and strong hold are great.
